1. "How much is a counselling session?" I know this is what most people, including myself, always look for first in FAQs so here you go!
The cost for a 50 minute session is $95.00. Payment methods: EFTPOS, bank deposit, cash.
I offer a reduced rate as I do not have capacity for Mental Health Care Plans or Private Health rebates. My total fee is less than you would pay out of pocket for both these services.
I have undertaken counselling specific studies (and am currently undertaking further study) to provide the best counselling service to my clients. Many people are not aware that related professions do not undertake any (or undertake minimal) counselling subjects in their studies.
2. How many sessions will I need?
This varies for everyone and we can discuss this after your first session. Sometimes people only need one session; others prefer several or ongoing sessions. Deciding this is a collaborative process.
3. Will you tell me what to do?
No, except for duty of care issues (if you tell me about risk of harm to yourself, someone else, or a child). People give us opinions on how to fix ourselves and our problems all day long; family, friends, strangers in the street. Everybody seems to know what's best for us. Surely, counselling needs to be different?
4. What approaches do you use?
Several, depending on the individual's needs. However, at the heart of my counselling style are Person-centred Therapy and Compassion-Focused Therapy.
Person-centred Therapy was founded by Dr Carl Rogers. It's about having unconditional positive regard, empathy and warmth for clients. I see my role as a guide, holding a bright lamp for your path, or, a person who gently hands you the keys to unlock your wisdom and potential.
My firm belief is that when people experience unconditional acceptance it leads to change in a wondrous and magical way. This may seem counterintuitive because we are all used to being told what to do by others! I believe we are all looking for warmth, empathy and acceptance. We wear so many masks and play roles simply trying to be accepted.
Compassion-focused therapy will help you to see yourself with kinder eyes. We can be very hard on ourselves due to family of origin experiences and subsequent life experiences. The result is often troubling thoughts and emotions we harbour towards ourselves. If you experience shame and self-criticism this type of therapy is particularly liberating.
5. I'm not used to asking for help. I feel a little awkward doing this.
I totally get this because that's exactly what I'm like. Let me remind you that asking for help when you need it is a sign of strength, not weakness. We all need a helping hand from time to time. I understand how much courage it takes to ask for help when you are usually independent, self-sufficient and the one who is helping others.
6. What hours do you work?
