I imagine this is what some of you may be thinking or wondering subconsciously, or consciously, so let's cut to the chase!
The short answer to this question is "No." It is not dodgy. In fact, it is becoming a very widely recognised and successful therapeutic technique. I used to think it was "dodgy" until I had hypnotherapy myself and realised clinical/therapeutic hypnotherapy was very different to what I had seen in stage shows. Hypnotherapy is not the same as hypnosis, especially stage hypnosis where hypnotists make someone do something embarrassing or silly. In hypnotherapy, you are not unconscious and you will not be made to do anything silly.
Did you realise your subconscious mind makes up 90% of your mind? Your conscious mind takes up a mere 10%? The picture above shows this best. This is often why we struggle to have lasting change - we are only relying on will-power and logical thinking when our beliefs and and habits are ingrained in our subconscious mind, most of them being formed prior to the age of six!
Hypnotherapy guides you into a very pleasant, relaxed state, where you are more aware of your internal experience than the world around you. This alone makes hypnotherapy incredibly helpful for stress and anxiety and "gives your brain a rest" so to speak. Clinical hypnosis builds a bridge between your conscious and subconscious mind. It helps to quieten the critical part of your mind that often "jumps in" and prevents real change from happening.
Hypnotherapy is done with your goal in mind so there is a point and a purpose to it.
Hypnotherapy is different for everyone. Some find it deeply relaxing, physically and mentally. Other people feel like they are day-dreaming or in a light state of sleep whilst simultaneously being aware of the process. There is no right or wrong, but most people agree that hypnotherapy is one of the most pleasing and relaxing experiences they have had. Hypnotherapy should be gentle, sensitive and tailored to suit the individual and the individual's goals for therapy.
HYPNOTHERAPY CAN HELP YOU WITH:
Hypnotherapy is not magic. I don't wave a magic wand and "fix" you - which is reassuring as it shows it is definitely not like the stage shows where somebody else controls your actions.
I also believe people need approximately 4 to 6 sessions to implement lasting change. Again, there are always exceptions to this and some people see change in just 1 session. You also need to be ready to change.
Your subconscious mind does the changing. If you are open and continue to apply the hypnotherapy techniques after the session, not just during, you have a wonderful chance of success.
No therapeutic technique can be guaranteed to work 100% of the time for 100% of people, but many people find hypnotherapy does work for them and exceeds their expectations.
